Many couples underestimate the power of a great professional DJ at their wedding. The right DJ will keep the fun flowing at your reception. (Remember, we’ve been talking about this- this is all supposed to be FUN. It’s a CELEBRATION). You already know all of the obvious reasons to hire a great DJ.

I want to talk about the less obvious part of being a DJ- the lighting.

One of my previous couples hired a very inexperienced DJ who ALMOST ruined their first dance photos. This DJ forgot to turn off their “party lights” setting during the first dance and left all kinds of laser zig-zag lights running during the dance. This resulted in

I had a couple that had all of the CUTEST do it yourself decorations. They spent an entire year leading up to their wedding lovingly and meticulously piecing together aisle decorations, centerpieces, reception decor, bouquets and so much more. 

Then came their wedding day, and you know what happened? They spent almost their entire wedding day installing, moving, and re-arranging box after box of decorations. Yes, their decorations were absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately my couple hardly got to enjoy their day. They didn’t get to bond and spend time with their bridal party. Their wedding day was a rush of setting up decor and breaking down decor. It broke my heart for them.

I absolutely love when couples pour themselves into their weddings and put custom personal touches on everything. However, make sure you have a good balance and ask yourself “who is going to be taking care of this stuff on the wedding day?” (This is also why I HIGHLY encourage every single one of my couples to hire a day-of coordinator.) I have some great ones I absolutely adore that I’ll share with you!

not HIRING A COORDINATOR

Your wedding day will be a bit of a blur and some things are going to be missed or forgotten. You can reduce the chance of that happening by assigning those “special tasks” to specific people. This also helps that person feel special and more involved in your wedding day than the other guests! 

Real life example: Kristin and Chris personally created their reception centerpieces with teacups full of succulents. (*Collective awwwwwws*) Their intention was for each guest to have a new little friend to take home as a favor. Unfortunately, none of the guests ~knew~ that and all of the tea cups and plants were left behind! 

This sad situation could have been avoided if the couple had pulled a guest aside prior to the wedding and put them in charge of this! An example of how to ask for this would be , “Hey Friend! Could you do me a huge favor? During the reception could you please go to each table and let people know that the teacups are meant to be taken home at the end of the night? It’s really important to us that people know it’s a gift from us and I’m worried I’ll forget to let everyone know!” 

Another option is to hire a day-of wedding coordinator!
